Steve Simpson is the director of Legal Studies at the Ayn Rand Institute where he writes and speaks on a wide variety of legal and philosophical issues. A former senior attorney at the Institute for Justice, Steve has litigated constitutional cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and state and federal courts throughout the nation, including SpeechNow.org v. FEC, the case that created super PACs. The author of Defending Free Speech (ARI Press, 2016), Simpson has spoken and written widely on free speech, campaign finance law, cronyism, and other legal issues. He has testified in Congress, appeared on many television and radio programs, and written for a wide variety of publications, including The Hill, where he is a regular contributor. Steve earned his law degree from New York Law School in 1994, where he was managing editor of the law review. He went on to clerk for a federal district court judge and to work in private practice at the international law firm Shearman & Sterling before moving into constitutional law in 2001.
