Laura Grube, Ph.D., teaches Principles of Economics, Comparative Economic Systems, and Austrian School Economics at Beloit College. Her research interests include political economy (and constitutional political economy), economic development, and Austrian School economics. From July 2008 – May 2009, Laura worked with the Free Market Foundation of Southern Africa (Johannesburg, South Africa) as a Fulbright Student. Additionally, Laura was a business analyst at Deloitte Consulting and senior business analyst at Perficient, Inc.

The Cajun Navy at the Prow: How Civil Society Responds to Disaster

Rising flood waters across 20 parishes have left thousands trapped, at least 13 dead and, according to the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, $20.7 billion in property damage. The sudden, unexpected nature of the storm combined with the severity and scale of the damage quickly overwhelmed response efforts. The Cajun Navy, however, was prepared. As one resident noted, “People showed up with water, Gatorade, food trucks and a line of boat captains ready to go.” The Cajun Navy, a group of local volunteers, stepped up to the challenge and has helped in the rescue of roughly 30,000 people trapped by flooding.
