Making Sense of the Great Depression

The 2008 financial crisis and subsequent recession prompted pundits of all ideologies to compare these events to those of the Great Depression. These comparisons have been used in the past five years to justify significant growth in the size and scope of government. However, many of the arguments are based on vast misconceptions about the Great Depression, and that is what I’m going to address in this program!
What to Expect from the Program:
In this eight-week program, we will explore four crucial questions:
1) What caused the Great Depression?
2) Why was it so bad?
3) Why did it last so long?
4) What eventually ended it?
In order to fully understand what happened during the Great Depression, we’ll begin with a chronology of events to provide historical context. We’ll also cover some basic economic theories about the causes of the Depression, including the Austrian theory of the business cycle. With this knowledge, we can examine the events of the Great Depression more closely.
During this time, we will find answers to questions behind the most common Great Depression myths:
1) Was President Hoover really an advocate of laissez-faire capitalism, and did laissez-faire capitalism policies cause the Depression to happen?
2) Did the New Deal really play a part in ending the Depression, as is commonly claimed?
3) Was World War II really the key to ending the Depression?
You may be surprised at what you discover!
You will have access to online videos, lectures, and playlists discussing the program's topics. A couple of hours each week will provide you at the end of the eight-week program with an excellent overview of the topic and a signed certificate of completion from Professor Horwitz.

How do I participate?
We’ve worked HARD to make participation for you EASY! The time commitment can be as little as two hours per week or so, but beware – our Professors’ programs are known to be so exhilarating and enlightening you may have trouble tearing yourself away.
It’s really a simple 3 step process -
WATCH a few short video lectures and entertaining intellectual content through our MentorMob playlists (if you don’t know what that is, we cover it in another FAQ question)
DISCUSS the program content in a private Facebook discussion group with your fellow participants and respond to the professor’s prompts
PARTICIPATE IN A LIVE SESSION led by the professor in the form of a Q&A or debate. You’re invited to join via webcam and submit questions to have address directly! Note that you don’t NEED to attend the live session, you can always watch a recorded version later, but it’d be a bummer to miss out on your participation, it’s really the best part.
Other than that, there’ll be opportunities to stretch your knowledge muscles by submitting “webwork” assignments to apply your program’s concepts in new and creative ways.
We’re always experimenting and rolling out new features and experiences, so there’s plenty of things to come that I’m just not ready to tell you about!
How do I receive a Certificate of Completion?
Easy, you just need to accumulate the right amount of points.
It varies for each program, so make sure to check out the program description page, syllabus, and Facebook discussion group. And you can always shoot us an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) to find out how many you need and how to earn them!
Here are some typical ways to earn points:
- Make a substantive comment in the Facebook discussion group
- Attend a live Q&A session during the program
- Ask a question for the professor to answer during the Q&A
- Submit webwork
What is webwork?
At Learn Liberty Academy, we don’t ask you to do traditional homework: quizzes, essays, or eraser-clapping. Learn Liberty Academy wants to see you communicate your learning online!
Note that this is something new we’re trying so we’ll have evolving guidelines that we’ll give you during each program. Also, it’s NOT REQUIRED to complete a program, but it will definitely warm our hearts. To get an idea of what we’re thinking, webwork might include:
- Write a wikipedia entry
- Write a blog post
- Start a discussion/debate on another forum
- Comment on a public blog/forum/publication
- Create a response video
- Create a playlist of videos
- Profile a scholar, and summarize them for the discussion group
- Identify examples of our topic in the news and share articles with the class

Will I get personalized attention from the professor?
Hell yeah! That’s really what differentiates us from other online programs. The professor dedicates several hours a week to interact with you and your peers in live sessions and a Facebook discussion group, posing questions and chiming in on your discussions!
I’m busy and important, I can’t attend the live session! Can I still view it?
Never fear! We record every lecture, debate, and Q&A for later viewing! You can just use the same link for the live sessions to access the recorded ones. It’s pretty cool, we know.
I’m kind of a genius, how do I complete with distinction to prove it?
At the end of each program, we identify the top superstars from the group based on a super secret proprietary formula (not really) which basically includes tallying up the number of points you’ve earned through the program. The participants with the most points will get personalized letters of recommendation from the professor curating the program.
With the title of Learn Liberty Academy superstar, you get put on a special list from which we’ll contact you for more awesome educational opportunities and other perks.

I can’t access YouTube, will I still be able to participate?
That might be an issue. Luckily, the internet is the enemy of repressive regimes, and you can usually find a workaround for censorship. Many of the videos our professors select are hosted on other sites, including learnliberty.org, but they are mostly embedded from Youtube. You can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll do out best to send you links to other sources.
Each Learn Liberty video also includes supplemental materials you can use to enrich your learning, if that helps.

What’s the difference between a Samurai and a Ninja?
Funny you should ask.
You see, in ancient Japanese feudal society, the Samurai were a well-respected class of wealthy and powerful noble warriors that strictly adhered to the ethical code of conduct known as Bushido. Born into a life of privilege and ascetic honor, their ultimate glory was to die in battle as a show of sacrifice for the Emperor or in defense of their lands for a greater purpose than their own lives.
A ninja, in contrast, arose as a recruit from the lower classes. They studied martial arts, as well as the arts of sabotage, espionage, and assassination. Through sheer meritocracy, they would rise from the shadows as hired guns to do the dirty work of the many clans of Feudal Japan. They were masterful warriors, smart and professional, who exploited their opponents’ weaknesses, infiltrated their defenses, and did whatever it took to accomplish the job they were assigned.
The samurai and the ninja represent many dualities. Idealism vs. opportunism. Aristocracy vs. meritocracy. Order vs. chaos.
